Andreas Mueller

Professor Andreas Mueller received his MD from the University Basel and the DMD from the University Zurich, both in Switzerland. He is certified and member of the Swiss Boards of Oral and Oral-Maxillofacial surgery as well as the European board of Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery and International Society of Craniofacial Surgery. In 2011, he completed the Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship Programme with the European Association for CMF surgery, in collaboration with the GSR Institute of Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery in Hyderabad, India. In 2012 he undertook a Cell Therapy Research Fellowship in Lyon, France. In 2013, he received a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Basel for his work on combining surgical and biomedical engineering methods to evolve lip and nose reconstruction. He then deepened his microsurgical training at the CMF surgery department in Amiens, France.
Since 2014, he has led the Division of Paediatric Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospitals Basel, as well as its Research Group for Facial and Cranial Anomalies. He teaches cleft care to the international AO CMF fellows visiting his institution. He is president of the Swiss Association for Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies. With the support from the Basel Research Centre for Child Health, and in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and international clinical partners, he is exploring the use of data science to simplify and optimise cleft care, particularly in regions with limited resources. The group has fully automated the plate design for pre-surgical therapy, making it openly accessible. His institution has over 30 years’ of experience in combined lip- and palate repair in a single surgery. He has completely redesigned this technique to maximise preservation.
