HyeRan Choo

Dr. HyeRan Choo is a leading authority in nonsurgical orthodontic treatment of upper airway obstruction, oral feeding difficulty, and orofacial deformities in neonates and infants with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) or Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP). Her cutting-edge research focuses on stimulating the growth of the upper airway and craniofacial skeleton in infants and children with craniofacial anomalies utilizing medical imaging and computational science. In recognition of her pioneering work, Dr. Choo received the prestigious 2024 David Precious Memorial Science Award from the International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation. Her research is funded and recognized by the National Institutes of Health / National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH/NIDCR), the Stanford School of Medicine, and the Stanford Maternal & Child Health Research Institute.
Dr. Choo earned her undergraduate and dental degrees from Seoul National University in Korea and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. She completed her orthodontic residency and Master of Science degree program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, followed by an advanced craniofacial fellowship at the NIH/NIDCR Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. A Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics since 2008, she began her academic faculty career at the University of Pennsylvania and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia that same year.
In 2016, Dr. Choo joined the faculty at Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. She serves as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and as Section Chief of Craniofacial Airway Orthodontics. Notably, Dr. Choo is the Inaugural Director of the Stanford Orthodontic Airway Plate Treatment Program for Pierre Robin Sequence (SOAP for PRS), the first program of its kind in the United States.
